Following the tradition of documentary photographers, I prowled the streets of Paris when I worked there as an assistant. I was interested in the interaction of people between each other and their interaction with their environment. One day I showed my favourite photographs to a friend, himself an established photographer, and he said, “These are photos of something happening, you should try to take photos of nothing happening.”

It has taken me a long time to understand and act on his advice. Of course, when I was working on assignments, my photographs were of “something happening”, but for my personal work, I look for “nothing happening”.

Unfortunately, most of the negatives of my Paris and early Hong Kong years have been lost, including my favourites.
