The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimmage is held on the third lunar month every year, starting from the Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, Taichung City and ending at the Sea Goddess Temple, Xingang Township, Chiayi County in Taiwan. On 1992, I joined the pilgrimage, starting at midnight and walking until 6pm the next day. We continued this way for 8 days and 7 nights. All along the pilgrimage route, the faithful congregated, the temples opened their doors to welcome Mazu and the pilgrims, and firecrackers and fireworks were set off non-stop. An impressive combination of ceremony and celebration.
Then on 1994 I suddenly received a call from a friend I made during the pilgrimage, inviting me to go again. How could I refuse? I relived the experience, with new insights.
I have often thought that only in Taiwan can one find the faith and fervour, the resources, and the managerial skills to organise such a grand event.
